About Tanzania Citizenship
Citizenship by Birth
Any person born in the United Republic of Tanzania on or after Union Day is considered a citizen of Tanzania if, at the time of birth, at least one parent is or was a citizen of the United Republic of Tanzania.
Citizenship by Descent
Any person born outside the United Republic of Tanzania on or after Union Day is considered a citizen by descent if one parent is a citizen of Tanzania by birth or naturalization.
Citizenship by Naturalization
Non-citizens of Tanzania may apply for citizenship through naturalization, meeting specific conditions and following a structured application process.
Conditions for Citizenship by Naturalization: Applicants must:
- Have lived in Tanzania for twelve consecutive months before applying.
- Have resided in Tanzania for at least seven years within the ten years prior to this twelve-month period.
- Demonstrate adequate knowledge of Kiswahili or English.
- Be of good character.
- Show potential for contributing to Tanzania’s economic, scientific, or cultural advancement.
- Intend to reside in Tanzania permanently if naturalized.
Application Procedures:
- Complete prescribed forms.
- Submit the application to the Ward Executive Secretary or Sheha (for Zanzibar) and pay a non-refundable fee of USD 1500.
- Publish a notice of intent in two consecutive issues of daily newspapers in Tanzania.
- Attend an interview with the District Defense and Security Committee.
- The District Immigration Officer forwards the application to the Regional Immigration Office for further scrutiny.
- The Regional Immigration Officer forwards the application to the Principal Commissioner of Immigration Services for recommendation to the Minister.
- In Zanzibar, the Commissioner forwards the application to the Second Vice President’s office before it reaches the Principal Commissioner.
- The Minister makes the final decision.
Naturalization of Women Married to Citizens: A woman married to a Tanzanian citizen can apply for naturalization anytime during her husband’s lifetime.
Application Procedure for a Married Woman:
- Fill in the prescribed forms.
- Submit the application at a District or Regional Immigration office or Headquarters, with a non-refundable USD 1500 fee.
- Publish a notice of intent in two consecutive issues of registered daily newspapers in Tanzania.
- The application is forwarded to the Principal Commissioner of Immigration Services and then to the Minister for a final decision.
Requirements for a Married Woman:
- Husband’s proof of citizenship.
- Marriage certificate registered in Tanzania.
- Copy of a valid passport.
- Proof of valid immigration status.
- Five recent passport-size photographs.
Naturalization of a Minor: The Minister may grant citizenship to a minor child of a Tanzanian citizen upon application by a parent or guardian.
Application Procedures for a Minor:
- The parent or guardian fills out prescribed forms.
- Submit the application at a District, Regional Immigration office, or Headquarters.
- The application is forwarded to the Principal Commissioner of Immigration Services and then to the Minister.
Requirements for a Minor:
- Proof of the parent or guardian’s Tanzanian citizenship.
- Birth certificate of the child.
- Valid immigration status.
- Five recent passport-size photographs.
- A non-refundable USD 1500 submission fee.
Renunciation of Tanzanian Citizenship
Procedures for Renunciation of Tanzanian Citizenship:
- Complete the prescribed application forms.
- Submit the forms to the local Immigration Office or Tanzanian Embassy/High Commission where the applicant resides.
- The application is forwarded to the Principal Commissioner of Immigration Services.
- The Principal Commissioner submits the application to the Minister, who registers the applicant’s declaration of renunciation.
Requirements:
- Proof of citizenship grant from the new country.
- Return of the Tanzanian passport.
- Five recent passport-sized photographs.
- Payment of renunciation fees of SEK 1100. (International Bank Account Number (IBAN): SE2895000099604210374718)
Kuukana Uraia
Ubalozi wa Tanzania, Sweden hautoi Vyeti vya Kuukana Uraia wa Tanzania bali inapokea tu maombi na kuyawasilisha Idara ya Uhamiaji, Wizara ya Mambo ya Ndani Tanzania. Hatua za maombi haya yanachukua si chini ya miezi mitatu kabla Cheti cha Kuukana Uraia kutolewa. Cheti kikitolewa kinatumwa Ubalozini na Ubalozi kukituma katika anuani sahihi ya mwombaji.
Mwombaji anatakiwa kujaza fomu mbili za maombi ya kuukana uraia (Pakua fomu hapa). Fomu hii inatakiwa ijazwe mbele ya Afisa anayeruhusiwa kupokea viapo. Huyu anaweza kuwa ni Afisa aliyeteuliwa na Wizara ya Sheria, Wakili, Hakimu au yeyote anayeruhusiwa kwa kutokana na Cheo au wadhifa wake.
Malipo ya huduma hii ni SEK. 1100 (elfu moja mia moja) ikiwa ni pamoja na gharama za posta. Ada ilipwe katika akaunti ya Ubalozi Post Giro Account: Anuani ni NDEASESS na International Bank Account Number (IBAN): SE2895000099604210374718. Risiti ya malipo iambatanishwe katika fomu za maombi.
Mahitaji mengine ni picha 3 za pasipoti, Pasipoti ya Tanzania (ili irudishwe Wizarani), barua aliyopewa ya kukubaliwa Uraia mpya (iwe kwa/imetafsiriwa kwa lugha ya kiingereza).
Deprivation of Citizenship for Naturalized Citizens
The Minister may revoke the citizenship of any naturalized citizen of the United Republic if it is determined that the naturalization certificate was obtained through fraud, false representation, or concealment of material facts, as outlined in the Tanzania Citizenship Act of 1995 and its 1997 Regulations.
