VISA entry requirements
Basic Requirements:
- Two recent passport-sized photos of the applicant
- A request letter (Note Verbale) from the applicant’s mission
- Hotel booking confirmation
- One completed and signed visa application form
- Photocopy of the passport’s bio-data page
1. Entry Requirements
Foreign nationals wishing to enter Tanzania must have a valid passport or other authorized travel document with at least six months’ validity, as well as a Residence Permit or Pass (if applicable). A valid visa, obtained either from a Tanzanian Mission abroad or at designated entry points within Tanzania, is also required unless there is a visa waiver agreement between the applicant’s country and Tanzania.
2. Visa
A visa grants permission for a foreigner to enter and stay in Tanzania for a specified period. Visas are issued to visitors for purposes such as tourism, business, healthcare, study, and other activities.
3. Who Needs a Visa
All foreign visitors to Tanzania require a valid visa, except those from countries with a visa exemption agreement with Tanzania.
4. Entry Authorization
After fulfilling the entry requirements, visitors are issued a Visitor’s Pass, valid for up to three months (or up to six months for East African Community citizens).
Type of Visa
(a) Single Entry Visa (Ordinary/Tourist Visa):
A single-entry visa allows visitors entry for up to three months for activities such as tourism, business, health treatment, studies, or leisure.
(b) Multiple Entry Visa:
This visa allows multiple entries for foreigners with business or investments in Tanzania, valid from three months to one year, with a single stay not exceeding 90 days. Applications are often made by a local contact, with a fee of $100 (except for Pakistan nationals, who pay $200).
(c) Transit Visa:
A transit visa permits passage through Tanzania to another destination for up to seven days. Applicants must show an onward ticket and proof of entry to their next destination. The fee is $30 and is non-extendable.
(d) Business Visa:
Issued for short-term business activities for up to three months, this visa is non-extendable.
(e) Gratis Visa:
Diplomatic, Service, and Official passport holders, as well as those with UN, SADC, or AU passes, may receive this visa at no charge for official travel.
(f) Referral Visa:
Certain nationalities require special clearance from the Commissioner General of Immigration or the Commissioner of Immigration in Zanzibar. Nationals of these countries should not book travel before obtaining a visa.
Visa Fees:
- Ordinary Visa: $50 (special rates: Pakistan $200, USA $100, Ireland $100)
- Transit Visa: $30
- Multiple Entry Visa: $100
Nationals from certain countries are required to obtain a Referral Visa before traveling to Tanzania:

Additionally, stateless individuals and refugees holding Vienna Convention documents are also required to obtain a Referral Visa before entering Tanzania.

- Oceania: Kiribati, Nauru, Samoa, Solomon Islands, Tonga, Tuvalu, Vanuatu, Cook Islands, Niue, Norfolk Island, Christmas Island
- Asia: Brunei, Hong Kong, Malaysia, Singapore, Macao
- British Overseas Territories: Anguilla, Bermuda, British Virgin Islands, Cayman Islands, Falkland Islands, Turks & Caicos Islands, Montserrat, St. Helena, Channel Islands, Ashmore & Cartier Islands
Visa exemption policies may change, and it is recommended to verify current requirements with the relevant Tanzanian authorities before traveling.
Important Note:
Holding a visa for the United Republic of Tanzania does not guarantee entry into the country. The Immigration Officer at the point of entry reserves the right to deny entry if the visitor does not meet immigration requirements or if their entry is deemed contrary to Tanzania’s national interests or security.

Requirements for VISA
SINGLE ENTRY / ORDINARY / TOURIST VISA
- Copy of the applicant’s valid passport;
- Visa application form dully filled in;
- Respective visa Fee;
- 2 passport size photographs ( for those lodging their applications through embassies).
- Provide flight itinerary, ticket or tour operator package receipt.
- People traveling for specific reasons other than tourism must submit a letter from their organization or office. These include but not limited to volunteers, people attending meetings & conferences, studies, diplomatic, official and any other business not mentioned here.
- Visa applications for minors under 18 years traveling alone or with only one parent/legal guardians should be accompanied by a notarized letter, jointly signed by parents or legal guardians approving the minor to travel, A copy of their ID
MULTIPLE VISA
- Valid passport at least for 6 month
- Visa application form duly filled in;
- Security Bond duly filled;
- Valid passport copy of the invitee;
- Three passport size photographs;
- Copy of the valid Passport or any other identity (For a host citizen of Tanzania);
- Documents of the Company like TIN, VAT, Registration Certificate, Certificate of Incorporation, Memorandum etc;
- Any other evidence to prove that the applicant is bound to travel frequently into the United Republic of Tanzania.
TRANSIT VISA
- Copy of the applicant’s valid passport;
- An entry visa or onward ticket to the intended country of destination;
- Respective visa fee;
- 2 passport size photographs ( for those lodging their applications through embassies).
BUSINESS VISA
- A valid passport at least for 6 month
- A work contract or any proof of the work/assignment to be performed within a period not exceeding three months;
- Respective visa fee.
Passes
DEPENDENT PASS
This pass may be issued to a dependent spouse, children, or close relatives.
Requirements for Dependent Pass:
- Completed application form
- Security Bond form with a 500 TSH stamp duty from the Tanzania Revenue Authority
- Copy of applicant’s valid passport
- Passport copy of the dependent
- Cover letter
- Marriage certificate for a dependent spouse
- Five passport-sized photos
- Previous Dependent Pass, if applying for renewal
- Birth certificate for dependent children or parent
Note: Male children over 18 years old are not eligible for a Dependent Pass.
IN TRANSIT PASS
Issued to foreigners passing through Tanzania en route to another destination, valid for up to seven days.
SPECIAL PASS
Allows a foreigner residing in or entering Tanzania time to apply for a Residence Permit or complete immigration procedures.
VISITOR’S PASS
Issued for purposes such as holidays, travel, court appearances, medical treatment, or other valid reasons. Valid for up to 90 days or six months for East African Community citizens.
RE-ENTRY PASS
Granted to individuals legally entitled to re-enter Tanzania after traveling abroad, with validity matching the existing Residence Permit.
BUSINESS PASS
Issued for single or multiple entries for individuals from countries not requiring a visa, for temporary business or professional purposes. Valid for three months and non-extendable.
MIGRANT PASS
Issued to individuals of African descent from neighboring countries who migrated to Tanzania before 1972 and remain without passports or identification from their original countries.
STUDENT’S PASS 1
Granted to those studying in approved Tanzanian institutions, including dependents over 18 of legally residing individuals.
STUDENT’S PASS 2
Issued to children of legally residing individuals under 18 who are not endorsed on their parents’ Residence Permits.
